2008 Coast and Creek Cleanup Thanks!

Many thanks to our 312 Coast and Creek Cleanup Volunteers who removed 9,540 pounds (4.77 tons) of trash and recyclables from waterways in Yolo County and an estimated 1,500 pounds of trash and recyclables from Solano County.  Some of the most unusual items found were a dryer with a full load of clothes still in it, a complete toilet, and the bill acceptor to a change machine.

Stebbins Fall-Winter Nature Outings

Stebbins Cold Canyon is one of the most pristine, back-to-nature places in all of Yolo and Solano counties. It offers hiking, sightseeing and the ability to breathe deeply in a natural setting.

The Nature Outing program offers a diverse menu of themed outings that explore the natural history and natural beauty within the canyon.

Most outings are interactive and experiential in nature, allowing participants the freedom to explore and interpret for themselves.

KIDS OUTINGS: Look for NATURE’S THEATER. These are activities where characters engage children to participate in a story that highlights age-appropriate environmental issues.

Presentations are free of charge. Please RSVP for each outing you are interested in attending. Most outings and the training have a limit of 15 people.

RSVP via e-mail: jfalyn@ucdavis.edu Please include your name, presentation date, phone number and/or e-mail address. Also, indicate whether you need directions or would like to arrange a carpool.

Greenhouse Workers Needed

Learn how to propagate native plant and grass species by volunteering with the Lower Putah Creek Coordianting Committee (LPCCC) at the CDF facility in Davis. This is an opportunity to help transplant species, learn how to propagate and care for plants, and to be involved in the step-by-step process to raise species from seed to restoration planting.

If you are interested in volunteering at the CDF facility with Rich Marovich of the LPCCC, please e-mail or call Dawn Calciano at dawn@putahcreekcouncil.org; (530) 795-3006.

We will be setting up a group of volunteers to help with various aspects of greenhouse work.

Putah Creek Nestbox Updates

Read updates on the Putah Creek Nestbox Project through "Riding the Nestbox Trail". The updates are very interesting reading and great photos are included. As new updates are received they will be posted under "News" on the PCC website.

The updates are written by Bobby Walsh who is a grad student who is basing his doctoral research on the nestbox project. He is assisted by Shawn Lockwood (undergrad in Wildlife, Fish & Conservation) and Dr. Jonathan Widdicombe (professor of human physiology) under the directorship of Andy Engilis and Melanie Truan.

As part of the Nestbox program, the birds are banded to keep track of them in the field and to participate in national conservation efforts. Keeping track of upcoming banding needs is a major undertaking! Bobby is also performing specialized data collection on chick diet as part of his research.
