The easiest place to start a tour of the reserve is at the Picnic Grounds slightly
to the east of where Hopkins Road ends. Many Davis kids are familiar with the area
from attending Camp Putah in the summers. To really enjoy the creek, however,
you'll have to leave your car or bike parked and go for a hike.
If you walk upstream (west) from the picnic area along the levee road, you'll have
good birding opportunities because the levee allows you to look into the tree canopy
more easily than if you were closer to the creek. This area is a favorite of birders
looking for the threatened Swainson's hawk, which roosts and nests near the creek
and forages in nearby agricultural fields.
