This riparian area in Winters has always been a good place to look for migrating birds like various warbler species, as well as resident birds, like great blue herons, Swainson's hawks, kingfishers and bluebirds. Particularly exciting in this stretch is to see the incredible effort that has been made by residents to improve the habitat. Thousands of native grass plugs have been planted as have hundreds of trees and shrubs, like valley oaks and elderberries. Improvement projects at the Winters Putah Creek Nature Park include the placement of w-weirs and gravel beds. W-weirs help to channel flows toward the center of the creek to prevent bank erosion and increase flow velocity and dissolved oxygen. The pools that form beneath the weir are good areas for fish.
