17: UCD Reserve: Near Water

| The water that you see in the creek here is flowing in the active channel.
The water that you see in the UC Davis Arboretum however is either pumped in or
runoff water in a closed system. It is not part of the active Putah Creek channel,
which was diverted south in the 1800's to protect "Davisville" from flooding.
Another common site along the creek in this stretch are nest boxes. The nest boxes
were placed here by UC Davis researchers studying bird populations and migration
patterns. You will notice small boxes with very small openings that are used
by bluebirds or other small birds.
|
| The larger boxes with oval-shaped openings are
for wood ducks. Also look for western gray squirrels, western fence lizards and
jackrabbits in this area.
